2 Pound Coin

Modern minting technology is really something. It can produce truly beautiful artwork in metal, and sometimes in precious metal.
The UK started minting 2 pound coins in 1986 and have made special versions for collectors in gold and silver. The obverses all have Queen Elizabeth II and the reverses have different patterns. All the coins are worth face value (2 pounds, about $3 US dollar) plus a premium. For gold and silver coins, the premium is equal to the current value of these precious metals. Most circulated coins are worth face value (FV) because they are made of non-precious metal and carry zero premium.
2 POUNDS NICKEL BRASS
worn thru well preserved: FV
fully uncirculated: FV plus $2 US dollars
2 POUNDS BI-METALLIC (copper-nickel and nickel-brass)
worn thru well preserved: FV
fully uncirculated: FV plus $2 US dollars
2 POUNDS SILVER
worn thru well preserved: FV + BV
fully uncirculated: FB + BV + $10
2 POUNDS GOLD
worn thru well preserved: FV + BV
fully uncirculated: FB + BV + $50
To compute the base value (BV) for these coins, multiply their gold or silver content by the current price of these precious metals (look up the price on kitco.com, it changes every day).
2 POUNDS SILVER: 0.475 troy ounces silver
2 POUNDS GOLD: 0.471 troy ounces gold
So, for instance, a 1986 2 pound gold coin fully uncirculated at today's gold price ($1390 USD per troy ounce) would be worth 3 + 0.471x1390 + 50 = $707 US dollars.

  • For a two pound coin! While the coin has not yet been taken to the coin auction – which we can only presume is an incredibly fun place that looks like Scrooge McDuck’s vault – experts say the coin’s odd look is similar to one found in another super-rare coin, a silver 2p, that was found earlier this year and was estimated to be worth £.

The £2 coins in base metal (as opposed to the gold double sovereign, which has a nominal face value of one pound too), nickel-brass, were introduced in 1986. They were modelled on the gold issues, having the same weight and diameter, although thicker - since gold is heavier than base metal. It is not uncommon for people to think they have found a gold coin in their change; however, a true gold coin would be struck in a proof finish and would have a more coppery colour.

The entire series of seven different designs in five different years were all commemorative coins, produced largely to appeal to collectors. All are available in different metals versions (nickel-brass, silver and gold). Due to their low mintage, these coins are collected and kept by the public and do not circulate in any realistic manner.

Two Pounds Coin

This 2 pound coin commemorates the XIII Commonwealth Games which were held in Edinburgh between 24 July and 2 August 1986. It is the first commemorative coin in the UK where the theme is a sporting event. The reverse design by Norman Sillman features a Scottish Thistle superimposed on St Andrew's Cross, which is also a symbol of Scotland. Uncharacteristically for British coins, the date is on the reverse, while the value and denomination are on the obverse.

After 1996, the bi-metallic Technology type £2 coin was issued, and all later £2 coins have been bi-metallic. Even though this coin type was superseded by the modern bi-metallic format, these coins are still legal tender.
